A: He's a make-believe character, who in our imagination, is the Man's twin brother. The real Smiley attended Burning Man only once back in 1996 and here is the photo to prove it.The entire concept is an homage to the original Flat Stanley Project that began in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a third grade teacher from Canada. It was designed as a literacy project to encourage letter-writing by schoolchildren to each other as they document what they did with their pal Flat Stanley over summer vacation.
